What is the purpose of a title sequence and a film opening? - RESEARCH

A film opening does many different things:

  • To introduce the film, e.g. genre
  • To set the tone - How it feels/how we should feel
  • To engage the audience - suspending disbelief
  • To credit the filmmakers, cast and crew
  • To introduce the characters
  • To introduce the setting/scenery

For example:

The opening to Juno tells us that it is set in an American town in Autumn. We learnt that the main character is a teenage girl named Juno, who likes guitars and music. The bright colours and fun music suggest this is going to be a light-hearted comedy, or coming of age film.
