RESEARCH: The four different types of film openings

The four different types of film openings are:

  • Titles on a blank screen
  • Titles on still images
  • Titles over moving images
  • Titles using Animation or motion

My favourite style of an opening is using animation or motion. I feel like this is a lot more interesting and engaging for the audience, and also gives the makers of the title sequence more freedom with what and how they want to express a message, or set the tone of the film.

For example, Scott Pilgrim Vs The World:

This is an exciting and engaging title sequence that immediately grabs the audiences attention. The mostly animated style, but starting off with live action helps create suspension of disbelief.
