RESEARCH - The Purpose of a Title Sequence and Film Opening

Film openings serve many purposes:
  • Introduces the characters
  • Introduces the setting
  • Gives a sense of the genre and the story
  • Sets the tone
  • Begins the suspension of disbelief
  • Engages an audiences
  • To credit the filmmakers

As an example, the opening sequence of Forrest Gump follows a floating feather. Over it, an emotional, beautiful piano piece plays, while we are introduced to a location that is, for the large part, unimportant to the overall movie. However, the tone and genre is made clear, and so the audience is immersed by the time the camera finally finds Forrest Gump sitting on the bench. All the while, the roll, centre screen, yet don't seem to distract from the imagery on screen.
